Touring GTA Elementary Schools May and June 2011!

Going into the warm weather months, it is imperative that children are educated on how to keep themselves safe. Cleo's Summer Safety Workshop is a fun and interactive ventriloquist presentation for students in the primary grades. It educates children on the importance of taking the proper precautions in order to enjoy safe and fun play.

The Spring and Summer Safety workshop is performed by actress and ventriloquist Wendy Clarke who specializes in children's educational theatre. She has performed at more than 200 Ontario schools over the past year and has received excellent reviews.

This intimate and engaging classroom workshop equips children with the essential summer safety do's and dont's based on the recommendations put forth by Safe Kids Canada.

Here is some information about the workshop:
  • Wendy and Cleo personally visit grades K-3 classrooms

  • Workshops are 25 minutes each

    • Includes classroom Summer Safety Poster

    • Includes PDF download-able follow-up worksheets
The workshop features Child educator and ventriloquist Wendy Clarke and her furry blue puppet Cleo.  At the beginning of the workshop, Wendy and Cleo walk the students through the different Summer Safety items in her safety kit.  Items such as a bike helmet, water bottle, life jacket etc…. Students are educated as to why they need to protect themselves and how each particular item can help them to do so.

Wendy and Cleo then read the class a giant book entitled “Safe Play, Fun Day!”  Students are now able to identify the safety errors that are being made throughout the book.  When a safety error arises, child volunteers are given the opportunity to correct the picture by choosing through a selection of cut out items to add to the picture.  For example, a student might choose to add a helmet to a bike riding scenario or a life jacket to a water scene.   In this way students are not only educated on the safety measures they need to be taking but they are given the opportunity to think critically about the ways they can make their own lives and the lives of others safer.

    Main message:

In order to have fun, we have to think of safety first. Primary students should always have adult permission and supervision before beginning any activity and take the proper precautions to protect themselves from danger.

    Topics Covered:
    • Sun safety: Which teaches primary students the things they should do in order to protect themselves from the sun such as, drinking plenty of water, wearing sun block, wearing a baseball cap etc...
    • Water safety: This teaches primary students to stay within arms reach of an adult when they are in a swimming pool, always wear a life jacket unless they have taken swimming lessons and their parents say they are allowed to swim without one, and to following the pool safety rules.
    • Bike safety and roller blade safety: This teaches primary students to always ride with an adult, wear a helmet, and to stay off the main roads.
    • Walking safety: This teaches primary students to walk with an adult or older child, look both ways, cross at the green light etc...
    • Stranger safety: This teaches primary students how to deal with strangers when they encounter them in public.
    • Rain safety: This teaches primary students to use an umbrella and/or a rain coat if it is raining, and if they hear thunder and lightening they should go inside.
    • Car Safety: This teaches primary students to wear their seat belt, sit in the back of the vehicle in a car seat when applicable.
    End of the Show:

At the end of the show Cleo and all the students take the Spring and Summer Safety Oath which recaps and affirms the key messages of the workshop. After taking the Oath, the class is presented with the Summer Safety Poster, which clearly summarizes the Summer Safety Rules through words and images.  This poster can be displayed in the classroom to signify that they have completed the workshop and have taken the pledge to follow the safety rules they have learned.
